Mastodon, a decentralized social network, increased in popularity after Elon Musk took over Twitter. Mastodon allows users to choose from several independent server instances, giving them greater privacy and control. However, with over 12,000 instances, choosing the right one can be overwhelming for casual users. For this reason, to make it easier to adopt new users, Mastodon has implemented a new registration process, with a default instance: mastodon.social.
Decentralization is at the heart of Mastodon's mission
Although decentralization is at the heart of Mastodon's mission, the team understands that it is important to attract a wider audience. Therefore, by providing a hypothetical example, the social network hopes to better demonstrate the advantages of decentralized social networks to a wider audience.
Mastodon also announced that it has surpassed 1 billion posts per month and has included some of its newest features, such as the ability to cite posts, improve their content, and profile search.
Mastodon has grown a lot in the past six months, despite some perceived setup challenges. Our platform has become a home for diverse discussions, viewpoints, and voices, including artists, writers, journalists, and political organizations. We just passed 1 billion posts per month, validating the very real, shared conversations happening in Mastodon and Fediverse in general.”
Additionally, the social network mentioned its ongoing work to improve content and profile discovery, which could help drive conversations on the service, improve moderation tools, and remove friction from the decentralized service
